Thefts From Fuel Tanks

We seem to be seeing an increase in the number of thefts from fuel tanks lately. This may be due to the government announcement in the 2020 Budget “its intention to remove the entitlement to use red diesel from most sectors from April 2022, except for the agriculture sector (as well as forestry, horticulture and fish farming), in vehicles designed to run on railway tracks, and where red diesel is used to power non-commercial heating systems, such as in homes, narrowboats and places of worship.”

Now tanks that only held red diesel are filled with the much more attractive white or road diesel.

Jigsaw Fuel management systems have a built-in theft detection system that will e-mail and even text you as the theft is occurring. If the tank level falls, but the system hasn’t turned the pumps on, it will automatically send texts and e-mails to nominated recipients – hopefully in time to do something about it.

Tank Gauging System

A fuel management system can’t do this on its own; a fuel management system monitors the pumps, but it has to be linked to a tank gauging system to be able to see the stock fall. It also needs to have real-time contact with the outside world to be able to raise the alarm.

Jigsaw systems can link to the most commonly used electronic tank gauges, so adding this function may not cost the earth, but compared to a tank full of fuel going missing, you could probably buy 10 new tank gauges and still have a lot left over. If you don’t have tank gauges, then Jigsaw can supply these too, either with probes directly to the Fuel Management Terminal or through an external console with its own display.
