Automatically read the Vehicles Odometer for more accurate MPG’s
Most large fleets these days are fitted with a telematics system. These systems, at their heart, are usually used to see where a vehicle is in the world, so that arrival times may be judged and managed efficiently. These systems do more than just track position though and will pass back other information such as the temperature of a refrigeration unit, the current driver, harsh braking events and many more data points.
Telematics In Fuel Management
With regards to fuel management, one of the most useful features is the ability to pass back the current odometer or engine hours of the vehicle along with the position. This is usually sent back when the ignition key is turned off, which is useful as this is usually the case when a vehicle is being refuelled.
The interfaces to the various Telematics Data Servers are all different, but in essence, there will be an API (external interface) to the database that holds the live data for all the vehicles on the system. Different systems have different ways of accessing this information – and even in identifying the vehicle; some will use the vehicle’s reg number, others the SIM number of the Telematics hardware, but all of this is managed by the jigsaw Fuel Management Server.
On receiving a fuelling event from a vehicle fitted with a telematics unit, the jigsaw Server will request the current mileage/hours of the vehicle from the Telematics server and then insert this into the other fuelling data. This happens in real-time so that the fuelling information, now including the current vehicle mileage, still appears on the web service only seconds after completion.
