Why do you need a tank gauge?

Jigsaws’ range of Tank Gauge options for both the Eclipse and the Nova are now available. At the most simple, tank gauge probes may be directly connected to the Nova or Eclipse with the bottom line of the Fuel management Terminals display being used to display the tank contents and ullage. To add an external display, bund and overfill sensor inputs and audio and visual alarm outputs, then a TG1 gauge may be used, still directly connecting to the Nova or Eclipse. If there is no requirement for a Fuel Island control terminal, then a comms module may be fitted to upload the gauge data straight to the Jigsaw TankGuard site.

A TG1 Tank Gauge terminal can accept two tank gauge probes directly or up to 8 probes and/or third-party tank gauges externally.

A variant of the gauge can be used completely stand-alone – no Fuel Management System, No Web site. This gauge would typically be used to guard the fuel in a tank in a remote location. The end user supplies their own SIM card and configures the system by sending texts.

In a perfect world, with 100% accurate pumps, flawless data entry and no fuel theft there would be no need. Unfortunately, that world doesn’t exist. All too often, tanks are dipped after a period of time and found not to match the value given by the fuel management system. Not a big worry if there is more in your tank than you thought, but when you have to explain to the FD why you are writing off 5000 Litres of fuel, things may be more difficult. Having both an accurate tank gauge reading and parallel book stock value, measured and calculated with each fuelling, will, in most cases, highlight exactly where any fuel discrepancy has arisen.

Plotting gauge and bookstock readings over several tank fill cycles will easily highlight poor pump calibration, short deliveries, bad delivery data entry and, most importantly, theft from tanks.
